Taber Wear Abrasion Tester
The Taber Wear Abrasion Tester features a modern, durable tabletop design built for precision and reliability. Its robust aluminum housing protects the control and drive components, while an intuitive LCD touch screen makes operation simple. Users can easily access features such as abraser status display, progress visualization, cycle/time switching, programmable pause intervals, and language selection.
The machine delivers accurate wear resistance data within minutes. To perform a test, the operator mounts a flat specimen onto a rotating turntable. As the turntable spins, two abrading wheels apply controlled friction to the specimen surface. A built-in vacuum system removes loose particles, ensuring clean, consistent testing. The abrasion process creates a distinct pattern of crossed arcs over a circular area of approximately 30 cm².
Purpose and Application
Abrasion resistance is a critical mechanical property for many surfaces. The TABER® Abraser method remains one of the most widely recognized testing techniques for evaluating wear durability. Many national and international standards reference this instrument for consistent, reproducible results.
The Original TABER® Abraser can test the abrasion resistance of coatings, including paint, rubber, paper, leather, ceramics, textiles, and metals. It is widely used in research, product development, production, and quality control.
Principle of the test
Two friction rollers apply a defined load onto the rotating specimen holder. As the specimen turns, the rollers wear the surface in an X-shaped abrasion pattern.
Operators can evaluate abrasion behavior using three primary methods:
- Weight Loss Method: Measure weight differences before and after a set number of rotation cycles.
- Visual End-Point Method: Observe the sample until the base surface becomes visible, and record the number of cycles.
- Abrasion Depth Method: Measure the worn depth after a defined number of rotations using a micrometer.
Standards
- EN 13329
- NEMA LD 3-2000
- EN 438-2
- ISO 4586-2
- NALFA LF-01
