The Carbon Arc Aging Tester uses an alternating current to create an arc between carbon rods, generating intense illumination. After passing through a filter, the light source delivers higher irradiation energy than natural sunlight. This high-energy light accelerates the aging of the sample’s surface.
The tester also includes a built-in sprinkler system that simulates rainfall, allowing it to reproduce both sunlight and rain conditions. By combining these effects, the instrument accurately evaluates a material’s weather resistance through accelerated testing.
During normal use, materials are often exposed to outdoor sunlight, indoor artificial light, or moisture from rain. These conditions can cause fading, yellowing, and changes in physical properties such as strength — a process known as natural aging. The Carbon Arc Aging Tester replicates these effects much faster, enabling manufacturers to assess a material’s anti-aging performance efficiently.
The tester features an electric light source that produces a discharge arc when two carbon rods touch and receive current. This arc forms the core of the carbon arc weathering system. The device uses four pairs of carbon rods — a thick upper rod and a thin lower rod — surrounded by filter lenses. The filtered light contains a range of wavelengths that closely match natural sunlight and radiates directly onto the surface of the test specimen.
A carbon rod drive system continuously adjusts the distance between the upper and lower rods to maintain stable voltage and current within the standard tolerance range. This ensures consistent light intensity and reliable test results.
